Orienteering in Parklandfamily orienteering

Rockingham Junior & Infant School, Roughwood Road, Wingfield Estate, Rotherham. S61 4HY. Grid reference SK 40895. Parking in school car park (parking fee £1).

Travel Directions

Signed from Fenton Road, SK 415 953.

From M1 J34 north (cross Tinsley Viaduct from J34 S) take the A6109 towards Rotherham, straight ahead at Rhymer’s Roundabout with a feature with 15 sloping yellow girders.  From J35, take the A629 towards Rotherham; at Rhymer’s Roundabout, turn left onto Fenton Road. After 2.5 km turn  left, following O-signs.

Sat Nav users will probably approach by quite different routes, especially from J35 or the NE, but look out for SYO feather at the school entrance.

Public Transport Instructions

The Wingfield estate is served by the 141 and 142 buses, Kimberworth circular, respectively clockwise and anticlockwise from Rotherham Interchange. Alight when the bus leaves Roughwood Road (part way along the loop) and follow Roughwood Road to the school. 141 stop is Roughwood Road/Wensleydale Road, just after The Plough; 142 stop is Roughwood Road/Wingfield Road, immediately on turning onto Roughwood Rd. From Sheffield or Meadowhall, catch the intermittent 36 (Sheffield-Rotherham) and alight at Whitehall Road/Town Lane; head south on Whitehall Rd and footpaths to Roughwood Road, and turn right. It’s probably quicker to catch the X1, X10 or X78 to Rotherham and change to the 141/142.

Competitors may run any course, but to score points in the Yorkshire Urban League, you must run the course for your age category as shown in the table.

Under 16s cannot compete on short green to black unless accompanied by an adult. Primary age children cannot compete on light green unless accompanied by an adult.

Black course has more than 30 controls. Competitors who have an old SIcard 7 can hire an upgrade without charge at registration.

Blue, Brown and Black: These courses have a significant part in woodland with a well defined path network. There are some brambles so leg protection is advised. There are some steep slopes in the woodland; rubber studded footwear is strongly advised.

White course is shorter than normal and is enclosed completely within the school grounds. Juniors will need to follow fences and hedges and cut across grass to obvious features. Children are welcome to run the course a 2nd time for free although their 2nd run will be non-competitive.
