Cliffhanger Maze at Devonshire Green

Export ICS

Start Times Sat 7th Jul 2018 at 10:00 - Sun 8th Jul 2018 at 17:00

The SYO maze proved popular as ever down on Devonshire Green this year, with some seeming to spend all weekend in the maze (maybe trying to find their way out!?) On Saturday we saw 567 runs, despite the draw of the football in the afternoon. Then on Sunday the number of runs more than doubled, with 1151 runs recorded. This total of 1718 runs over the weekend absolutely smashes last year's total of 1418.

No formal results, but the (legitimate) winning times for the courses seemed to get down to:

  • Easy - 0:59
  • Medium - 1:43
  • Hard - 1:24
  • Fiendish - 1:59

Special mention to those who developed relay tactics to pass the dibber between runners - managing to get the time for Easy down to 37 seconds!

Particular thanks to the 40+ SYO members who helped out on the maze over the weekend - with jobs ranging from handing out star stickers, climbing trees and ladders to reach bunting/cables, and cutting 1000s of zip ties during the pack up! The volunteer team contained a wide range of ages and abilities, which was great to see, and showcased the great inclusivity of orienteering.

Cliffhanger 2018

As part of the Outdoor City's FREE Cliffhanger festival, SYO will once again be setting up maze orienteering on Devonshire Green.

The maze will have a NEW Design for 2018, and will be open all weekend (10am to 5pm) for you to Give it a Go for FREE!

In addition, on the Sunday SYO are holding the Sheffield City Race, which gives you a true taste of urban orienteering. Starts for this event are only from 10:30-12:30. Courses (White to Black) to suit all ages and abilities, including a course for adult (16+) newcomers.

Venue Details

Situated just within the ring road, Devonshire Green is the only large open space in the centre of Sheffield.

It plays host to many events throughout the year, including being the hub for the Outdoor City's Cliffhanger festival in July, when a large climbing stage is constructed for the British Bouldering Championships.

Safety & risk

A comprehensive risk assessment will have been carried out by the organiser, but participants take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety during the event. If a competitor has a pre-existing medical condition that they think should be declared, please complete a medical form at enquiries. The sealed envelope will only be opened in an emergency.
