Planners Comments

I hope you enjoyed the courses today. It was quite a difficult area to plan on with it's awkward shape and high vegetation. The aim was to keep you out of the really vegetated areas and have good legs in terrain where possible with route choices to keep things interesting. I thought the harder semi-open area was best left to the end of the course to test if people could switch from easier navigation and hard running to fine navigation.

Controllers Comments

After receiving a few comments on number 107 I went out to take a look. The green has extended into the re-entrant but I don't think that should have caused to many problems. The control was hung so it was visible from about the edge of the circle when approaching it from the normal attack points. After watching for a few minutes, what seemed to be happening was some on the Green and Short Green (when leaving 57) were being forced further North by the thicket but then not compensating and heading down into the re-entrant in the rough open, often being drawn by other competitors already hunting down there. Easy to let technique slip at the end of the course on what looks like short and fairly easy leg.

SYO Junior Refreshments Stall

Thank you to everyone who supported and helped on the SYO Juniors stall today at Treeton! It was a lovely atmosphere in assembly, with our pop-up café proving a success – meaning that we raised £115 through the sales of the refreshments.
It was great to see many of the juniors involved – including taking on roles such as waiter, salesperson, cake-wrapper and barista very expertly.
The money raised is a very welcome addition to our SYO Junior Squad funds, and will go towards future club junior competitions.

Courses

See below for details on the courses on offer.

Course Distance / Climb School Years Technical Level Who is it for?
White

1.8km, 20m

Y3/4/5 1

The easiest course and a great place for children to start.  The course is entirely on paths and each time you have to make a decision - which path to take, there will be a control point.

Yellow 2.3km, 40m Y6/7 2

The next step up and a good place for teenagers etc. to start.  The course will use paths but also other line features - Fences, streams etc.
It will also no longer have a control everytime you need to decide where you are going. For example you may need to make a couple of turns on paths between controls.

Orange 2.9km, 75m Y8/9 3

Harder still, the Orange course introduces:

  • Choosing routes - e.g. should I go round the paths to the left or right
  • Using 'Point Features' as control sites

Those doing either of the Orange courses need to be able to judge distances, orientate the map using surrounding features and a compass, use attack points and be bold enough to venture a little wayoff paths. A good place for confident adult beginners to start.

Long Orange 4.9km, 140m Y10/11 3

Similar difficulty to an orange course, but quite a bit further! A good place for adult runners to start.

Light Green

3.3km, 90m

  4

Ideal for improvers  The navigation difficulty increases and you start to use simple contours and point features.

Short Green 3.3km, 65m   5 As hard as the area allows but avoids the physically tough terrain.
Green 5.5km, 155m   5 As hard as the area allows. This course visits both woodlands and the semi-open area south of the dyke.
Blue 6.9km, 215m   5 As for the green but longer. There are plenty of long route choice legs
Brown 10.2km, 240m   5 As above but further still......

Schools Competition: Individual & Team competitions for years 3 - 11. School organised groups or individuals welcome. There is no need to enter in advance, just turn up and we can take all the information at registration, although if you are bringing a group of children please This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Children can run in pairs up to year 8 but must stay together. Shadowing is not permitted for the Yorkshire Schools Champs but is allowed if you are not competing specifically in the competition.

Prize-giving: 14:00. Prizes for first 3 girls and boys in each year. Team prizes for Primary & Secondary schools (4 to count).

Pupils should run the following courses:

Y3/4/5 - white
Y6/7 - yellow
Y8/9 - orange
Y10/11 - long orange

Safety:

You must wear full leg cover (including socks that fully cover the ankle) on all courses orange and above.

The woods are used by horse riders, cyclists and walkers. Please be considerate of these users. Warning signs have been placed around the area to advise the public of the event.

There is a dilapidated mountain bike track in the northern woods. The green, blue & brown courses have control sites in close proximity. Whilst no bikers have been seen using the track, please do watch out just in case.

Orange courses and above will pass across and along the track close to the water ski hut. There may be a small amount of traffic - please take care.

The white & yellow courses follow a path that runs closely alongside the dyke. Bikes and horses may also use this path. Please warn juniors to watch out for other users of the area. Unhappy faces will also be used on both white and yellow to indicate to juniors when they have gone the wrong way. If they come across an unhappy face they should turn back the wuy they have come.

The yellow course has controls on some features that are not directly on the path, although they will be visible from the path.
