Hesley Evening Event & BBQ - Wed 12 June
Enjoy orienteering amongst the varied terrain of Hesley Scout Camp at our next evening event on Wednesday 12th June. The woodlands contain a wealth of contour detail as a result of the area's rich industrial heritage and this mixed with sprint style orienteering through the huts and obstacles of the main camp will provide a good challenge for experienced orienteers. There are also plenty of paths and open areas to cater for the less experienced.
There is a choice of 4 different courses - yellow, orange, green and blue - with starts 6-7pm. More details here.
Post event we will be having a BBQ at the scout camp. Choice of:
- Beef or cheeseburger - hotdog - portabella mushroom in a bun (vegan option).

The scout shop will also be open selling cold soft drinks, sweets and ice-cream from 6.30-7.30pm.

YBT Final - 7th July
The SYO Junior Team were triumphant at the YBT Regional Heat at Mausoleum Woods, so we are through to the National Final, to be held at Sandringham, Norfolk on Sunday 7th July.
The best junior club teams from around the country will be attending; 16 in the Trophy competition, and 6 in the Shield (for smaller clubs). Competition will be fierce, but with a large SYO team we would hope to do very well. SYO were the overall winners in 2017 & 2018, and we'd like to make it a hat-trick & retain the trophy for another year.
All SYO juniors able to run at least a Yellow course are eligible to compete, and it would be great to have as many SYO Juniors as possible taking part. All team members score points, so everyone contributes to the team effort, either by adding to the SYO Score, or by reducing other clubs' scores. Any junior that doesn't feel confident running individually can run as a pair on yellow.
We'll be hiring a coach for the day, leaving Sheffield at 7:30am, returning around 7pm. The journey time is around 2.5 hours each way. SYO will be part subsidising entry fees and coach travel so the YBT entry fee will be £3 and coach travel £10. Secondary age children can attend unaccompanied but primary age children need to have a nominated adult travelling with them.
Please sign up by Sunday 9th June by following this link. Please email Jacky if you have any questions

National Volunteers Week

None of us this would be possible without those members that give up countless hours to plan, control, organise, coach, manage SI or help in a thousand other ways. THANK YOU!

British Orienteering Champs Report
The May Day bank holiday weekend saw the British Orienteering Champs visit Yorkshire for 3 days of top quality racing.
The British Mixed Sprint Relays were a new addition to the weekend and kicked racing off to an exciting start. Bradford University offered challenging urban orienteering on surprisingly hilly terrain. SYO’s mixed sprint teams performed incredibly well, particularly in the junior categories as we were missing many of our older juniors at the World Schools Orienteering Champs in Estonia. There were two fabulous wins – our vets team of Andy, Kim & Oli and our under 12s team of Robbie, Anna & James. There was a well-deserved silver for our under 16s team of Matthew, Freya & Will and there was bronze for our 2nd under 12s team of Oscar, Lawrence & Charlotte, who all still have another couple of years in this category!
Sunday saw proceedings move to the Yorkshire Dales and the limestone pavements of Kilnsey. There were some fabulous performances from our members with a whopping 7 British Champions crowned. Congratulations to Robbie (M12), Tim T (M55), Peter G (M70), Charlotte (W10), Freya (W12), Kim (W40) and Amanda (W45). There were silver medals for James (M12), Ella (W10) and Judy (W65). Well done also to Freddie G who took his first victory on M10B.
The final day of racing was the forest relays at Middleton Park in Leeds. The athletics stadium made a super arena with excellent spectating. Courses were surprisingly challenging with lots of runners getting caught out by the numerous thickets and paths. Relay day also saw the return of our WSOC juniors which bolstered the numbers in the junior classes. With 5 class wins and 4 other podium positions it is safe to say that SYO had a very successful relay day!
1st Women’s Open – Kim, Mary & Cat 1st M40 – Andy, Nick B and Oli 1st M50 – Martin, Bill & Tim 1st W18 – Isabelle, Isobel & Alex E 1st M14 – Jamie, Olmo & Conrad 2nd W14 – Imogen, Freya & Alex 2nd Mini – Robbie, Anna & James 3rd Mini – Oscar, Ella & Charlotte 3rd M18 – Dom, Max & Euan 3rd W40 – Jenny J, Lucy & Amanda
Next year’s BOC will be held in the South East over the weekend of 19th & 20th March with both races to be held on a new area names Marley Heights. Get the date in your diary – we need to make sure we retain all those titles we picked up this year! Visit our website to check out the full report with photos.

World Orienteering Day Report
South Yorkshire Orienteers celebrated World Orienteering Day with a lovely sunny evening event on Wednesday 15th May. 176 people enjoyed the stunning views across Sheffield from Bole Hills & The Rivelin valley. There were 6 different courses, all expertly planned by the Lightfeet family, catering to the wide range of participants on the night including toddlers, brownies, schools children, super vets, students, runners and experienced club members. After the event many club members adjourned to the Old Grindstone to enjoy a special World Orienteering Day Menu!
Wingfield Event Report
Last Sunday saw SYO stage our first event in the Wingfield area of Rotherham. The area comprises of intricate housing estates interspersed with park and woodland. While the attendance of SYO members was lower than normal due to the event falling at the end of half term, plenty of orienteers from other clubs made the journey to try out this new area. Thank you to everyone who helped but particularly controller Peter, organiser Amanda and planner and mapper Henry.
Facebook is increasingly being used as a marketing and advertising tool and SYO are keen to use it for publicising events. We also regularly report on events and celebrate members' achievements. Please like our page and join the SYO group. The more likes we get on our posts, the more people see our page, so please try to engage regularly.
