Coronation Park Free Event - Fri 10 Aug

There is a free orienteering event in Coronation Park on Friday 10th Aug.

There are 3 courses on offer - very easy (0.5km), easy (0.8km) and medium (1.5km). You can do as many courses as you like as many times as you like. This event is ideal for younger juniors and beginners.

Courses will be open from 2-4pm (last start 3.45pm). Please park on nearby residential streets and look out for the SYO banner in the park. More details here.

Edge Evening Event & Social - Tues 21 Aug

SYO will be holding a sprint / urban evening event at the Edge Campus on Tues 21st Aug. Starts are 6-7pm with a choice of 4 courses. Courses 1 & 2 are suitable for under 16s. More details here.

After the event the Pieters are hosting a social. Food arrangements will be finalised when we have a better idea of numbers.

Please email Pauline of you are intending to join the social by Friday 17th Aug. If you are just attending the event, map orders can be made up until Sun 19th Aug.

Peter Palmer Relays - Sun 9th Sept

SYO are hosting the 2018 Peter Palmer Junior Relay competition. This is a 6 leg relay that starts in the dark at 5am and finishes around 9am. It is open to all SYO juniors from M/W12 - M/W18 (those born between 2000 and 2007). There are courses suitable for all including daytime yellow legs. Juniors stay over night in a sports hall adjacent to the competition area. Full details here. Please email Jacky by Friday 17th August if you would like to be part of the team.

As you can imagine, for the adults organising and planning, this event is a big ask. Not only do we have the responisibility of supervising all the SYO juniors overnight but we also have to run the overall event and all in the early hours of the morning. If you are able to help in any capacity, please email Jacky.

Saturday Series 2018/19

The newly named Saturday Series of events kicks off on Saturday 8th September in Endcliffe Park. The format remains unchanged but in addition to the schools league there is also a separate adults' league. Starts are from 12.30 to 3pm (courses close 3.30pm). White, yellow & orange courses remain in Endcliffe Park, while the longer courses (long orange, green, blue) extend into the Edge campus.

As most of my normal band of helpers will be busy setting up the Peter Palmers and we are expecting many of the Peter Palmer teams from around the country to attend this event, I will need lots of extra volunteers. No experience of orienteering is necessary to help unless you're putting out controls! Please email Pauline and offer your services if you can spare some time.

Equipment Garage Clear Out

Equipment Officer John Franklin is conducting a clear out of the SYO garage on Sandbeck Place on Saturday 11th August at 2pm. He would very much appreciate a helping hand. Please email him if you can help for an hour or so.

World Masters Report

The World Masters Orienteering Champs are held annually and are a 'must do' for the world's best veterans aged 35 to 100! There are 3 main competitions - sprint, middle and long and these combined with qualifiers and model events give 8 days of orienteering. This year the event was held in Copenhagen in Denmark. Superb organisation and wonderful weather resulted in a fabulous competition and many participants are already planning their trip to next year's WMOC in Lavia.

A handful of SYOers took part, some performing exceptionally well. The biggest accolade must go to Nick Barrable for winning bronze in the sprint and middle races and a silver in the long! Special mention should also go to Laura for her 5th, 6th & 7th places in W35 and Amanda for 17th in the sprint in W45.

Summer Multi-days report

For the keen orienteers in our membership, the summer means a chance to combine a holiday with a multi-day orienteering competition. As usual our members have travelled far and wide attending the OO Cup in France, the Oringen in Sweden, the Lakes 5 day and the Croatia Open.

OO Cup, France
The OO cup is traditionally held in Slovenia but this year the organising team decided to venture further afield to the Jura region of France. The slightly more accessible location led to a swell in entry numbers with over 3000 participants. There were 5 days of competition in incredibly physical and technically challenging terrain. Every day counted so a mispunch or retiral was very costly! Conditions were sweltering but the organisation and course planning were excellent as usual.

A good number of SYO members made the journey to this one as the event fell at the start of the school holidays. Fortunes were mixed for many. Dave, Oscar, Nathan & Jenny, Andy P and Euan, Pete & Freya all achieved top 10s on individual days. Best overall results of the week went to Dan T who was 1st on Open C, Tim T 7th on M55 and Will P 7th on M10 shadowed.

Oringen, Sweden
The Oringen is the world's biggest orienteering event with between 15,000 and 20,000 participants. This year it was held in the far north of Sweden. It's clash with the OO cup and it's slightly less accessible location meant less club members attending than usual but Aislinn, Mary and the Hartmanns all made the trip. Like the OO cup all 5 days count with the last day a chasing start. Attendees enjoyed the event reporting very technical terrain and surprisingly hot conditions.

The Lakes 5 Day
Every 4 years the Lakeland clubs host a 5 day orienteering competition. Many SYO members entered this one attracted by the good quality Lakes terrain and its relative proximity to home. Unfortunately, whilst the rest of the UK basked in the Europe wide heatwave, there was a permanent raincloud over the Southern Lakes which persisted throughout the 5 day competition!

Nonetheless participants still managed to enjoy themselves and there were some fabulous overall performances by SYO members. Results are based on your best 4 days of competition. Congratulations to Conrad 3rd M12A, Freya 2nd W12A, Imogen 3rd W14A, Euan 1st M14A, Louise 1st W20L, Laura 3rd W21L, Nick B 1st M40L, Amanda 3rd W45L, Charlie A 1st M50L, Lucy 1st W50L, Neil S 3rd M65S and Peter G 3rd M70L.

Croatia Open
While most of us were getting soggy in the Lakes the Wards and the Baxters were enjoying the wonderful weather, courses and terrain of the Croatian 6 days. This is a very small and friendly competition, comprising of urban and forest orienteering with all 6 days to count! Martin, Kim and Ricky all entered M40 and came 1st, 2nd & 3rd respectively while in W10 Ella came 2nd overall.

See the SYO website for accompanying photos!
