About the coaching programme
South Yorkshire Orienteers are the most successful orienteering club in the country, but also has one of the best development programmes - there is a comprehensive coaching programme available from beginners through to international athletes. We have 3 part-time coaches funded through the three British Orienteering coaching initiatives that SYO are part of – Participation, Talent and Club and Coach. We run sessions almost every week of the year from foundation level up to elite level. British Orienteering coaching initiatives that SYO are part of – Participation, Talent and Club and Coach. - Participation Project – to increase participation in club activities by new members, predominantly through provision of regular ‘Club Night’ activities.
- Talent Project - to develop the skills of club orienteers, of whatever age, who wish to improve.
- Club and Coach - to offer local coaching and activities to young people on a regular basis using paid coaches and volunteers and through this activity develop the coaching and volunteer infrastructure.
SYO has a weekly clubnight, suitable for all ages and abilities. This is run from The Pearson Building at Sheffield Hallam University, Collegiate Campus, Broomgrove Road. It runs from 6.45 - 8pm every Wednesday, and there is usually a range of physical and technical activity for newcomers and experienced orienteers alike. Often we go outside to orienteer in local parks or around the streets. See the fixtures list and above for details. We are not just interested in developing athletes - we also want to develop coaches. If you are either a qualified coach, or are interested either in coaching or becoming qualified, please contact us. You can email Graham Gristwood, the lead coach at oneandonlygg@gmail.com
